Emerald Coastkeeper and Escambia County will host a “groundbreaking” and cleanup event at the headwaters of Carpenter Creek on Saturday, Dec. 9.

The four-mile-long creek rises in north Pensacola and runs southeasterly, weaving through some of Pensacola’s most heavily-developed areas before flowing into Bayou Texar. The headwaters, essentially a small lake, is located at 715 Olive Road in north Pensacola. Escambia County purchased the property — an 8.5-acre parcel entirely surrounded by development — earlier this year as part of a larger effort to restore the Carpenter Creek/Bayou Texar Watershed.

Emerald Coastkeeper, a local environmental nonprofit, has partnered with local officials like Pensacola city councilwoman Sherri Myers to host several cleanups along the creek in recent years.

The headwaters cleanup will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. No registration is required, but carpooling is encouraged as parking is limited. Supplies, including gloves and trash bags, will be provided by Emerald Coastkeeper. County commissioners Lumon May and Commissioner Grover Robinson, as well as other local elected officials, are expected to attend the event.
