The Pensacola City Council will see at least two new faces come November, with Councilman Brian Spencer announcing Tuesday that he will not seek reelection this fall.

Of the three incumbent city council members up for reelection this year, two have now announced they won’t be running: Spencer and Larry B. Johnson. District 2 Councilwoman Sherri Myers has filed to run for a third term and is currently unopposed.

“After much reflection, I have decided not to seek reelection for city council,” Spencer said in a press release. “This has not been a hastily made decision. The power of incumbency is historically strong. I am, however, confident that this upcoming campaign and election cycle will serve as a springboard for new candidates to enter the local political arena. These individuals should be embraced as viable new candidates willing to serve District 6 and the City of Pensacola.”

Spencer — who represents Downtown Pensacola as well as all or part of the Belmont-DeVilliers, Long Hollow, Eastside, North Hill and East Hill neighborhoods — is widely expected to run for mayor.

“While I may no longer serve as a member of the Pensacola City Council, I will remain a tireless advocate for the preservation and renaissance of the City of Pensacola’s historic districts, neighborhoods, streetscapes, and buildings,” Spencer said. “I will continue to strongly promote the importance of sound urban planning principles that recognize a vibrant downtown as an essential ingredient for a sustainable city and its surrounding metro area. My passion and commitment to the betterment of our City and the citizens of Pensacola will remain steadfast.”

Five candidates are currently running to succeed Ashton Hayward as Pensacola’s mayor, including three-term county commissioner Grover Robinson; former publisher of The Pulse and small businessman Drew Buchanan; Christian television station manager David Mayo; pastor and veteran Lawrence Powell; and educator J. Green. Candidates have until June 22 to qualify for the ballot.
