Former pro baseball player Greg Litton on Wednesday joined an already-crowded race to succeed Grover Robinson as Escambia’s District 4 county commissioner.

Litton becomes the sixth candidate — all Republicans — in the August 28 primary.

In a press release, Litton said he would focus on streamlining bureaucracy that discourages business development and job growth, continuing the fight for Triumph resources to fund economic development, addressing traffic and parking on Pensacola Beach, and improving or replacing the Pensacola Bay Center.

A New Orleans native who grew up in Panama before moving to Pensacola at 13, Litton graduated from Woodham High School and Pensacola State College. A first-round pick in Major League Baseball’s 1984 amateur draft, Litton would go on to play for the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, and Boston Red Sox over the course of his career. Since leaving baseball, he’s worked as a professional speaker.

“I want this job because I know I have the character and backbone to do what’s right for the whole county and not just my district,” Litton said. “From my background in sports, to many different business ventures, to the 12 years as an inspirational speaker with The Studer Group, my professional life has always revolved around my commitment to teamwork and being a leader. I will bring that same attitude and work ethic with me to the County Commissioners office if elected.”

In addition to his work as a motivational speaker with the Studer Group for 12 years, Litton has also served as a manager and appraiser for Meadows Jewelers, and as an Account Executive for Everest Payment Solutions. Currently, Litton is a loan originator for Primary Residential Mortgage. Litton has also served on the Board of Governors for PSC and the YMCA, as well as being a speaker for and supporter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for 30 years.

Robinson has served on the county commission since 2006. He announced in 2016 he wouldn’t seek a fourth term on the commission, and is instead running for Pensacola mayor.

Other candidates in the race to succeed Robinson include Robert Bender, Kendrick Doidge, Bill Fetke, Terry Strickland, and Boyce White.
