Online retail giant Amazon.com will open a sortation center in the Mobile area later this year, adding hundreds of jobs at the company’s first facility in Alabama.
“We look forward to creating hundreds of jobs to help us better serve customers in Mobile County and throughout Alabama,” said spokeswoman Ashley Robinson.
Sortation centers are different from Amazon’s fulfillment centers, where customer orders are picked, packed, and shipped. Those orders then flow to sortation centers, where associates sort customer packages by zip code to allow for faster and expanded delivery options, such as Sunday delivery and later purchase cut-off times.
The Amazon facility will be located at 6735 Trippel Road in Theodore, adjacent to Interstate 110. Once completed, the building will be over 350,000 square feet in size.
“There are a lot of contributing factors that go into our thought process on where to place a new customer fulfillment or sortation center,” Robinson said. “Most importantly, we want to make sure our facilities are placed as close to the customer as possible to ensure we can offer a great Prime service and fast shipping speeds to customers. We also look at the workforce and we’ve found great talent in abundance in Mobile County.”
The company wouldn’t say exactly how many jobs will be created with the sortation center, but similar Amazon facilities typically support between 300 and 500 employees. The jobs will include both full and part-time positions, Robinson said.
