On Friday, the University of West Florida will make an announcement regarding a new archaeological discovery in Pensacola.
In a statement released today, officials said the UWF archaeology program will host a press conference Friday at the T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum downtown to announce the discovery.
In 2015, UWF archaeologists announced the discovery of one of the most significant historical sites in the nation: the archaeological site of the 16th century de Luna settlement, hidden just beneath the surface in the city’s East Pensacola Heights neighborhood.
The settlement was the first multi-year European colony in what is now the United States. The discovery made international headlines and provided substantial proof of Pensacola as America’s First European Settlement.
It is not yet known if this discovery is related to the Luna settlement.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
