Two top officials at the Pensacola Fire Department have been placed on administrative leave, a city spokesman confirmed Tuesday.
Public information officer Vernon Stewart said that fire chief Matt Schmitt and deputy fire chief Joseph Glover are both on paid leave and an investigation has been opened. Stewart would not comment on the subject of the investigation but did confirm that it is being conducted by a “outside agency.” Stewart said he couldn’t identify the outside agency and said he didn’t know when the investigation may be completed.
Fire marshal David Allen has been named interim chief, effective immediately.
Schmitt has served as the city’s interim fire chief since 2010 and has served as a Pensacola firefighter for more than 35 years.
Reached Tuesday, Pensacola mayor Ashton Hayward said he could not comment further on the matter.
