A Santa Rosa legislator is calling on state officials to hold a contractor responsible for delays on the long-running Avalon Boulevard construction project.
State Representative Doug Broxson (R-Gulf Breeze) sent a letter Monday to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) officials expressing his frustration as well as the frustration of the many residents and business owners along Avalon Boulevard for the lengthy delays in completing construction.
The well-traveled corridor, which connects Interstate 10 with Highway 90 near Milton, has been the focus of ongoing construction work since 2009. The work includes widening the road from two to four lanes, as well as installing sidewalks and service roads. The project has been delayed several times, with FDOT officials announcing last year that work would be completed by October 2015. That deadline was missed, and completion is now slated for February.
“We are convinced the general contractor, Midsouth Paving Inc., failed in their professional and ethical duty to our community,” Broxson wrote. “My office has received numerous calls from constituents relaying their anger of how long this project is taking. We have also worked with several businesses along Avalon Boulevard that are struggling to operate because of the prolonged construction delay.”
“We greatly encourage the Florida Department of Transportation to impose every contractual penalty on Midsouth Paving Inc.” added Broxson.
