Sunshine Garden Cafe has been serving hungry folks across from Baptist Hospital for 29 years, but later this month, the popular lunch spot will close its doors.

Owners David and Genevieve Bookman announced Tuesday that they would retire, and the restaurant’s last day open will be November 22.

“We would like to thank our many loyal and faithful customers whose business has made our success possible,” the couple wrote in a message to customers. “We appreciate you thinking of us when it’s time for lunch.”

The cozy restaurant, its walls covered in memorabilia and kitsch, opened in 1989.

“We would like you to know that it has been a pleasure to meet you, to get to know your names and your jobs, to learn about your children and grandchildren,” the couple added. “We will miss you and be forever grateful that you helped to turn our dream into a reality.”

The Bookmans also thanked Baptist Hospital, which purchased the building in which the restaurant is located in 2012.

“We would also like to thank Vice President John Porter of Baptist Hospital and his staff for his help and cooperation that has allowed us to stay open the last several years,” the couple said. “And a special thanks to all the Baptist employees who have supported us.”

Sunshine Garden Cafe is located at 1025 West Moreno Street and is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through November 22.
