Bike Pensacola has set its next monthly Slow Ride event for Saturday, September 23. The Slow Ride event provides an opportunity for cyclists to explore the quiet, scenic streets of Pensacola’s many historic neighborhoods on a fun and leisurely ride among friends. These rides are designed for people with any kind of bike and any skill level.
Gulf Power is hosting the public event to support efforts to create a bike-friendly community and encourage families and friends to recreate together. The ride will begin at 4 p.m. at Gulf Power’s headquarters at 500 Bayfront Parkway and is free and open to the public. The entrance to parking and the event is on 10th Avenue.
Because most cyclists are “self taught,” each month organizers will be offering information about bicycle laws, safety tips, and addressing different bicycling skills that will help cyclists keep rides safe and enjoyable.
The leisurely ride through the historic and downtown districts of Pensacola is open to bike riders of all skill levels. Parents are encouraged to pull small children in bike trailers or have them ride in child seats on your bike.
“We’re excited to be a part of this popular community event that attracts 200 to 400 riders at each of the monthly rides,” said Kimberly Blair, Gulf Power spokesperson who has been participating in Slow Rides for two years. “It’s a wonderful way to see the beautiful and interesting neighborhoods and commercial districts off the main streets of the city while getting some fresh air, exercise and opportunities to meet new friends and learn about the host business.”
The rides are led by Pensacola cyclist and longtime bike commuter Christian Wagley, and certified cycling instructor Timothy Bustos, founding board members for the new organization Bike Pensacola.
Gulf Power invites the riders to stick around after the ride and enjoy refreshments, music and to check out its electric vehicles and bike and learn about its electric vehicle and EnergySelect programs.
