Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward will present Pace native and World Series champion Addison Russell with a key to the city, his office announced Monday.
The 22-year-old Chicago Cubs shortstop hit a grand slam in Game 6 of the World Series earlier this month, helping to force a decisive Game 7, which the Cubs won the following day to claim their first championship since 1908.
An All-American athlete at Pace High School, Russell led the Pace Patriots to win the 2010 Class 5A state baseball championship. Selected as a first-round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics in 2012, Russell was traded to the Cubs in 2014 and made his Major League Baseball debut in April 2015.
Hayward will present Russell with the key to the city in a ceremony held Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall, located at 222 West Main Street in Pensacola.
