The Alabama Career Center System, in partnership with WKRG-TV and Bishop State Community College, will host a maritime recruitment event on Tuesday, October 4.

The job fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Yvonne Kennedy Auditorium at Bishop State Community College.

Officials say the event is aimed at filling more than 1,800 positions in the maritime industry. Available positions include welders, machinists, electricians, pipefitters, mechanics, engineers, as well as support and administrative positions, with the average salaries for those positions ranging from $17.87 to $42.99 per hour. Applicants with prior experience in the maritime industry or those who have completed or are attending maritime training are strongly encouraged to attend.

“This recruitment event is the result of a collaboration between industry, government, and training providers,” said Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington. “The community expressed to us the need for qualified workers, from welders to shipfitters. It’s our job to match to jobseekers with jobs, so this event is an effort to do just that. All of these employers have open positions to fill — it’s one of our requirements to participate. These positions are competitive, high-pay, high-skill jobs. Anyone who may be able to fill these positions needs to register and come speak with these employers.”

Jobseekers are encouraged to pre-register online at www.labor.alabama.gov/jobfair. Pre- registering will allow for faster entry, and participants are strongly encouraged to print their confirmation and bring it with them to the job fair or to save their confirmation e-mail on their phones or smart devices.

Many area maritime industry employers are scheduled to attend, including Austal USA, Horizon Shipbuilding, Hutco, Ranger International, and others.

“We are looking forward to hosting the Maritime Recruitment event at Bishop State,” said Austin Monk, Director of Workforce Development at Bishop State Community College. “The Maritime industry sector is one of the highest-demand careers in the Mobile region. This event offers an opportunity for our community to learn more about this growing industry. Bishop State offers several credit and non-credit training programs that train and qualify entry-level workers to enter the Maritime sector and other high demand, high wage jobs.”

Applicants should come to the job fair with their résumés, be prepared to interview, and should be dressed professionally, organizers said. The Alabama Career Center System’s mobile career center, along with staff from the Mobile Career Center and other area career centers, will be onsite at the recruitment event to assist jobseekers in applying for jobs.
