A new nine-story development one Destin city councilmember has described as a “monstrosity” could soon be built next to the two 13-story towers rising above the Destin harbor.
Destin-based developer Emerald Grande, LLC submitted their plans for expansion to their Emerald Grande and HarborWalk Village development to the City of Destin last month. The company is slated to begin construction on what they are dubbing phase two of the HarborWalk Village development.
The HarborWalk development is proposed to be built on a 9-acre property at the corner of Stahlman Avenue and Harbor Boulevard between the existing Emerald Grande and Margaritaville restaurant. The latest phase would include an 80 room hotel, 200 unit condo, 25,000 square feet of retail space, and a parking garage.
Although the Destin city council has no say on approval for the development, some council members are frustrated at the new proposed tower along the already crowded harbor.
“From an infrastructure standpoint it’s already a mess,” Destin City Councilman Chatham Morgan told the Northwest Florida Daily News. “This will only compound the issue. It boggles the mind. When is enough, enough?”
“The current development is almost universally considered a monstrosity,” Chatham added.
