The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra will close out its concert season with a performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 on April 30 at the Saenger Theatre.

Guest artist Jennifer Frautschi will be joining the Symphony, performing the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1. Frautschi previously performed with the Symphony in 2011.

The second half of the concert will begin with a brief video presentation to preface the performance of Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony. “The delicious combination of ambiguity and irony abounds in the music of Shostakovich,” said Maestro Peter Rubardt. “The character of the music is sharply drawn and compelling, yet hard to pin down. It’s like listening to a speaker where the words are clear but the meaning is evasive; we’re left wondering ‘What did he really mean?’ Of course we’ll never know, because we’re not supposed to know. The very lack of certainty contributes to the music’s lasting power.”

The performance will take place at Pensacola’s Saenger Theatre on Saturday, April 30 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $22 and are on sale now at pensacolasymphony.com or by phone at (850) 435-2533.

There will also be an open dress rehearsal for this concert beginning at 1:30pm on April 30th. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Palafox entrance of the Saenger Theatre. Starting at 6:30pm, Dr. Larry Reed will present his “Classical Conversations” for those who are interested in learning more about the music prior to the concert. This event is free with an evening concert ticket.
