Fort Pickens Road and the Fort Pickens area will reopen today after high winds and strong surf threatened the vulnerable road this week. Motorists and bicyclists are urged to use caution as sand and water remain along several stretches of the road.
Visitors may call the Fort Pickens Road hotline to get updates at 850-934-2656, or check our Facebook page www.facebook.com/GulfIslandsNPS.
When announcing this update, Superintendent Dan Brown said, “We’re glad to get the Fort Pickens area open for the public. We were fortunate that the damage was limited, and the driving lanes remain intact.”
As we reported earlier this week, Fort Pickens Road is at risk for indefinite closure. Federal officials have said the road, which is owned and maintined by the federal government, could be wiped out with the next “big storm” or hurricane that strikes the area.
